WITH the Thaipusam celebration around the corner, the Penang Hindu Association (PHA) has advised devotees and members of the public to wear face masks as a precautionary measure to reduce the risk of airborne respiratory virus transmission.

The advisory is issued in view of the larger crowds expected this year due to the long weekend, as well as concerns following the Ministry of Health’s statement on a recent Nipah virus (NiV) outbreak detected in India. In response, the Health Ministry and the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) have intensified health screenings at international entry points, as tourists — particularly from India — are expected to attend Thaipusam celebrations in Malaysia.

“Although there is no indication that the virus has spread to Malaysia, PHA advises all those attending the celebration to take precautionary measures by wearing face masks and practising proper hand hygiene, especially when handling food and drinks,” PHA president Datuk P. Murugiah said in a statement.

He added that the advisory is also issued amid concerns over the potential spread of influenza viruses during large gatherings. As such, PHA strongly encourages high-risk groups, including the elderly, children and individuals who are more vulnerable to influenza, to exercise extra caution and wear face masks when moving through crowded areas.

Taking into account the potential health risks, PHA has also appealed to the Penang Hindu Endowment Board and all temple management committees to consider distributing free face masks to devotees and the public attending the celebration.

“This measure can help curb the spread of airborne pathogens and reduce the risk of infection, particularly among those at higher risk,” the statement said.

On behalf of PHA, Murugiah wished all Hindus a happy and safe Thaipusam celebration.
