IN a heartfelt celebration of history, resilience, and forward-looking collaboration, the Malaysian International Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MICCI) Northern branch commemorated its 188th anniversary with a gala dinner at the Eastern and Oriental Hotel, that brought together government leaders, industry captains, and business stakeholders from across the nation.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow led the evening with a stirring tribute to MICCI’s enduring role in Penang’s economic transformation.

“As MICCI celebrates its 188th year, we celebrate more than history as we celebrate your continued relevance and partnership in shaping Malaysia’s economic future,” he said.

He highlighted Penang’s remarkable journey from a traditional port economy to a global manufacturing powerhouse, noting that the state contributed RM352 billion in exports between January and August 2025, over a quarter of the national total. RM158 billion came from the Electrical & Electronics (E&E) sector alone.

“Penang’s success story has always been one of collaboration, between government, industry, and the people.

“Through InvestPenang and in close cooperation with all the relevant Federal and state government agencies, we will continue to work hand in hand with industry to attract quality investments and promote sustainable growth,” he said.

The chief minister also shared updates on key infrastructure projects, including the Bandar Baru Ayer Itam–Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Bypass (Pakej 2), now 87.5 per cent complete, and the upcoming Penang International Logistics Aeropark (PILA), which aims to position Penang as Southeast Asia’s premier air cargo logistics hub.

“When completed, PILA will feature smart and sustainable logistics infrastructure, seamlessly connected to international air routes and designed to strengthen Penang’s role in the global supply chain,” he said.

MICCI Northern branch chairman Datuk Brian Tan Guan Hooi reflected on the Chamber’s rich legacy dating back to 1837, when it was first established as the Penang Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture.

“We are proud to be the oldest chamber in Malaysia, not only having witnessed history, but having shaped it.

“MICCI has stood as a pillar of the business community, a trusted bridge between the private sector and government, and a steadfast advocate for commerce and industry,” Tan said in his speech.

He paid tribute to the Chamber’s longest-serving chairman in the North, whose nearly 25 years of service have left a lasting impact on MICCI’s legacy.

The evening saw the presence of MICCI president Christina Tee and General Council members from across Malaysia, including representatives from Johor and Perak, a testament to the Chamber’s spirit of unity and shared purpose.

“What truly defines MICCI is the spirit of collaboration.

“Together, we will make this chamber stronger and continue building a Penang that is prosperous, sustainable, and inspiring for generations to come,” Tan added.

The gala dinner also honoured sponsors whose generous support made the celebration possible, with their names proudly displayed on the event backdrop.
