THE Malaysian Press Institute (MPI), one of the country’s oldest journalism training bodies, is set to launch its first-ever state-level MPI Journalism Awards in Penang next year.

MPI president Datuk Yong Soo Heong said the inaugural awards aim to celebrate compelling journalistic work that captures the essence of what makes Penang unique.

“Journalists taking part in the awards can submit stories that highlight Penang’s vibrant tourism industry, transformative infrastructure projects such as the Silicon Island and the Light Rail Transit (LRT), as well as other developments that shape the state’s narrative.

“We are currently refining the award categories, which will cover a broad range of topics and media formats. The plan is to hold the awards ceremony in the second quarter of next year,” he said.

Yong shared these updates during a courtesy visit to Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow at Komtar today.

Also present were the state Communications Division director and Chief Minister’s press secretary Yap Lee Ying, MPI chief executive officer Ainol Amriz Ismail, MPI general manager Norlida Jamain and MPI committee member Zamri Rambli.

Chow expressed his full support for the initiative, saying the state government is eager to collaborate with MPI to ensure the awards are a success.

“We look forward to hosting the MPI Journalism Awards in Penang and are prepared to extend our support to help bring it to fruition,” Chow said.
