National conference to address challenges and importance of Tamil education

PENANG will be hosting the first of its kind Tamil Education National Conference in the state to address the challenges and importance of Tamil education.

Deputy Chief Minister II Prof Dr P. Ramasamy said the conference would be held from 9am to 5pm on Nov 26 and 27 at The Light Hotel in Seberang Jaya.

The national conference, themed ‘The Future of Tamil Education in Malaysia Baru’, will be organised by the state government through the Deputy Chief Minister II Office together with the Penang Society for Advancement of Tamil (PSAT).

“The conference will look at Tamil education in a holistic perspective.

“Penang has taken the initiative to have a national conference to stress the importance of mother tongue education.

“Mother tongue education is an important education aspect of all Malaysians.

“It is in line with the Constitution of this country that allows the practice of mother tongue education,” he told a press conference during lunch break at the State Legislative Assembly today.

He said that about 200 participants had registered for the conference.

Among the topics that will be discussed are Tamil education in Malaysia, teaching of Tamil language in national schools, establishment of secondary Tamil schools and future of Tamil education in Malaysia.

Dr Ramasamy, who is also the State Economic Planning, Education, Human Capital Development, Science, Technology & Innovation Committee chairman, invited the public to register and take part in the the conference.

Also present was Bagan Dalam assemblyman M. Satees, who is also the organising chairman of the national conference.
