ENFORCEMENT of newly designated no-parking zones in George Town has yet to begin, as studies on those locations are still ongoing, says Penang Island City Council (MBPP) mayor Datuk A. Rajendran.
He said three locations have been identified so far, with the possibility of more areas being added following further assessment by the council.
“The first location is Jalan Hutton, between Jalan Transfer and Jalan Penang. The second is Lebuh Chulia, between Lebuh Pantai and Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling, while the third is the Air Itam Market area, involving Jalan Paya Terubong,” he said.
Rajendran said the council, through its Engineering Department, has been instructed to continue studying other potential locations and to include feedback from relevant stakeholders in the decision-making process.
“We will be engaging the respective assemblymen, business operators and residents of premises located within the affected areas before any enforcement is carried out,” he added.

He stressed that the focus of the study is on major roads used to enter and exit George Town, as congestion along these routes could have serious implications for overall traffic flow.
“In the southern area, the main entry routes include Jalan Jelutong and Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah. In the central area, roads such as Datuk Keramat, Air Itam and Paya Terubong are also being looked at,” he said.
Rajendran added that in the northern area, the affected roads include Jalan Hutton, Jalan Larut, Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah, Persiaran Gurney and Jalan Burma.
“These are the main corridors leading into and out of the city. Even a single vehicle stopping illegally along these roads could cause serious congestion,” he said.

Rajendran said MBPP would announce the enforcement date only after studies are completed and consultations with stakeholders are concluded.
Earlier, Rajendran witnessed the swearing-in of two MBPP councillors. They were Mohamed Yusoff Mohamed Noor and Mohamad Khairani Abd Shukor.
