A NEW chapter awaits Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (Tamil) Rajaji in Air Itam, as plans are underway to build a modern school complex behind the former Sunshine Farlim site, right next to SJK(C) Chiao Nan.
The long-awaited project, which has been in discussion for several years, will finally give the Tamil vernacular school a proper home after decades of operating on land owned by a nearby temple.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the initiative demonstrates the Penang government’s continued commitment to providing quality education infrastructure that caters to all communities and mother-tongue education streams.
“The state government has already identified the site, located beside SJK(C) Chiao Nan, for the new SJK(T) Rajaji building.
“The land has been handed over to the school management board, and this move will allow the school to relocate from its current site, which is situated on temple land, to a more permanent location,” he said during a Deepavali programme at Sunshine Sentral in Air Itam today.
Chow explained that the state has agreed to fund the construction of the new school building, subject to further arrangements with the developer involved in the project.
“The construction will be financed by the developer as directed by the government. However, if the developer decides to contribute or waive certain costs, that will be announced later,” he said.
According to Chow, construction works are expected to begin by January next year, pending approval from the state Education Department.
“This means that SJK(T) Rajaji will have a brand-new school without needing to collect funds for land acquisition or construction.
“The land is provided by the state government, and the building will be built by the developer. Once it is completed, the school can move in immediately,” he said.
Chow described the project as a meaningful effort by the state government to support Tamil schools and the preservation of mother-tongue education in Penang.
“This is a reflection of the state’s concern and commitment to schools of all vernacular streams, including Tamil education.
“From a small, modest campus to a new and larger facility, this will benefit many families who wish to send their children to SJK(T) Rajaji,” he said.
The new school site, located just behind the old Sunshine Farlim complex, forms part of a broader rejuvenation plan for the area, which has been earmarked for community-based redevelopment projects.
The proximity to SJK(C) Chiao Nan also reflects the state’s inclusive approach to fostering harmony and unity among different communities through education.
Chow also expressed gratitude to the people of Penang for their unwavering trust and support, which have enabled the state administration to continue implementing projects that improve lives.
“I have not forgotten our beginnings, that we once came from the opposition. But because the people of Penang placed their confidence in us, we have been able to govern and serve since 2008.
“We will never forget the contributions and support of the people who made this possible.
“Since 2008, we have worked tirelessly to develop Penang into the progressive state we see today. But our work is not done yet as there are still many major projects that need to be completed in the years ahead,” he said.
Chow also reaffirmed that the Penang government will continue to pursue initiatives that drive sustainable growth, inclusivity, and educational excellence across the state.
“We remain focused on building a brighter future for Penang, a successful state that continues to be among the most dynamic contributors to Malaysia’s economy.
There is still more to be done, but together, we can achieve it,” Chow said with a smile.
The crowd responded joyfully upon hearing this news from the chief minister.
