THE Penang government has yet to make a final decision on whether to convert the proposed undersea tunnel project into a bridge.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow reiterated that, as previously stated by state executive councillor Zairil Khir Johari, the suggestion to switch from an undersea tunnel to a bridge remains merely a proposal submitted by the concession company.

“The state government reserves the right to determine the project’s implementation based on the outcome of the ongoing feasibility study.

“We have indeed held discussions with the concessionaire to explore several possibilities following the necessary studies. These discussions are also subject to external factors.

“As such, the state government will give sufficient time to the concession company to complete the feasibility study,” Chow told reporters when asked about the matter today. He was met at the closing ceremony of the Padang Kota Youth Bowling Competition 2025 at Penang Bowl in Farquhar Street today.

Previously, it was reported that the state government had not ruled out the possibility of constructing a third bridge to replace the proposed undersea tunnel project, a component of the RM6.3 billion mega infrastructure project.

Penang currently has two bridges linking the island to the mainland.
