One-way traffic enforced at Taman Gottlieb during rush hour congestion

THE traffic flow at part of the Taman Gottlieb neighbourhood has been diverted from a two-way to a one-way system for specific hours.

Penang Island City Council (MBPP) councillor Connie Tan said the traffic system was diverted to alleviate traffic congestion that would occur during peak hours.

“After looking into the complaint made by the Penang Chinese Girls Primary school, the council decided to implement a one-way traffic flow for certain hours.

“The traffic diversion is enforced only during school days, from 6.30am to 8am, 12pm to 2pm and 6pm to 7.30pm.

“It was implemented on March 10 after getting the consent from the residents,” said Tan during a press conference today.

Tan added that the one-way traffic system would be on a three month trial basis.

Meanwhile, the school’s Parent Teacher Association (PTA) chairman Jocelyn Ho said the school would be introducing, a ‘drive-thru’ system soon for parents to pick-up their children after school.

“We will be using the radio frequency identification (RFID) technology to detect their parent’s vehicle.

“Once the parent’s vehicle enters the school area, the respective student’s name will appear on the LED screens installed at our waiting bay.

“The students will be then assisted by our volunteers from PTA to get into their respective vehicles.

“This will prevent students from over crowding the waiting bay and at the same time will contribute to a smooth traffic flow,” said Ho.

Its vice-chairman Lim Kheng Wee said PTA volunteers have their own working shifts to assist the students.

Also present was Pulau Tikus assemblyman Chris Lee.
