Optical glass manufacturer hopes to be a climate-neutral company by 2030

LEADING global optical glass manufacturer Schott Group is planning to become a climate-neutral company by 2030 and wants to make an active contribution to climate protection.

 

Schott Group board of management member Hermann Ditz said becoming a climate-neutral company is one of the company’s main aspirations.

 

“We want to lead by example and thus become the first climate-neutral manufacturer of speciality glass.

 

“We are focusing on four fields of action, namely, technology change, increasing energy efficiency, switching to green electricity and compensating for technologically unavoidable emissions for such purposes,” Hermann told visiting Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow during the latter’s visit to the Schott Glass (M) Sdn Bhd in Perai Industrial Zone today.

Chow was welcomed by Hermann and Schott Advanced Optics executive vice-president and Schott Malaysia board director Marcus Knoebel upon his arrival and was briefed by both of them on the company’s business operations, mission, vision and policies.

 

Chow commended Schott Group’s green initiatives and aspirations which were in line with the Penang2030 vision of ‘A Family-Focused Green and Smart State that Inspires the Nation’.

Chow was also taken on a tour of the facility to witness the production process and view the equipment and machinery.

 

At the end of the visit, Chow thanked Hermann and Marcus for their warm hospitality. Hermann also presented a memento to Chow.

 

Also present were Malaysian Investment Development Authority (Mida) Penang director Muhammad Ghaddaffi Sardar Mohamed and Schott Malaysia managing director Peter Egon Berberich.

 

Headquarters in Mainz, Germany, Schott Group is owned by the Carl Zeiss Foundation.

 

The company specialises in speciality glass and glass-ceramics. It has more than 130 years of experience in developing glass materials and offers a broad portfolio of products and solutions.

 

It also serves high-tech industries including healthcare, home appliances, living, consumer electronics, semiconductors, datacom, optics industry and energy, automotive, astronomy and aerospace.

 

Schott Glass Malaysia currently has more than 950 employees, which will increase to more than 1,000 employees in the next few months.
