THE police in Penang have successfully frozen more than 150 mule accounts linked to an online gambling syndicate involving funds exceeding RM32 million.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said that the police have continued to carry out special operations, such as ‘Ops Dadu’, as part of ongoing efforts to dismantle online gambling and scam syndicates operating in the state.
“According to PDRM statistics, in 2023 alone, a total of 2,337 reports related to online gambling and its promotion were recorded in Penang. These led to 2,681 arrests and 1,390 charges being filed,” Chow said.
He added that for 2024, up to now, 1,510 cases of online gambling and its promotion have been reported, resulting in 1,810 arrests and 1,084 individuals being charged.
“As of March this year, there have been 485 online gambling-related cases, leading to 542 arrests and 255 charges,” Chow (PH–Padang Kota) said in response to an oral question from Joseph Ng Soon Siang (PH–Air Itam) during the Penang Legislative Assembly session today.
