PENANG Art District will present the Spotlight 2025 Finalist Showcase, featuring the top 20 emerging Malaysian artists selected through this year’s national open call.

The exhibition will be held at MassHaus Gallery, 147A Victoria Street, George Town, from Dec 12 to 28, opening every Thursday to Sunday from 12pm to 5pm. The official opening is scheduled for Dec 13 (Saturday), from 12pm to 2pm.

Now in its eighth edition, Spotlight continues its mission to discover, nurture and elevate new artistic talent in Malaysia. Over the years, the programme has grown into one of Penang’s key platforms for emerging artists, made possible through the continued support of UOB Malaysia, a long-standing advocate for arts and creative development in the region.

“The Spotlight programme is designed not only to recognise artistic excellence, but to create meaningful pathways for emerging artists,” said Kenny Ng, general manager of Penang Art District. “We are proud to provide a platform that supports their growth, visibility, and creative confidence.”

This year’s submissions reflect a wide range of artistic expressions, spanning painting, sculpture, mixed media, and experimental practices. The diversity and depth of ideas reflect the evolving landscape of contemporary Malaysian art and the boldness of its next generation.

“Each edition of Spotlight reveals the incredible range of creativity found among emerging Malaysian artists,” said Lee Khai, head judge for Spotlight 2025.

“The finalists selected this year demonstrate strong concepts, refined craftsmanship, and the courage to explore new directions in their practice. It has been inspiring to witness their growth and potential.”

The finalists were shortlisted through a rigorous judging process led by an esteemed panel of cultural and creative professionals. A second round of physical judging will take place at MassHaus Gallery to determine the Grand Prize Winner and the recipients of the Jury’s Choice Awards.

Spotlight 2025 is supported by UOB Malaysia as the main partner and Penang Institute as a supporting partner.
