Penang government assures non-profit organisations of nominal quit rent amidst technical error in bill

THE Penang government has issued a clarification regarding a technical error in the quit rent bill imposed on non-profit organisations that own land for non-profit purposes.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said those who have been enjoying nominal quit rent of RM1 over the years would continue to enjoy the nominal quit rent.

“There is no change in policy.

“This involves land under four categories, namely, registered houses of worship, religious or charitable organisations, public cemeteries, and other institutions,” he told a media conference at his office today.

Chow speaking to the media at his office in Komtar.

Chow said several schools in Penang, which fall under the ‘other institutions’ category, had appealed to the District and Land Office after receiving their quit rent bill which showed a higher land tax.

“The District and Land Office was undergoing an updating exercise which had resulted in a technical error.

“The ‘actual’ land tax amount (instead of the nominal quit rent of RM1) was reflected in the bill.

“Hence, this announcement is to clarify the mistake. Those who are entitled to enjoy the nominal quit rent of RM1 will continue to enjoy the benefit.

“The non-profit organisations can bring their quit rent bill to their respective District and Land Offices to check and pay the quit rent beginning June 1.

“Those affected do not have to appeal to enjoy the nominal quit rent of RM1,” he said.

Chow added that all tax payments involving non-profit organisations must be completed by June 30.
