THE ongoing Light Rail Transit (LRT) project in Penang is being closely monitored through a stringent system to ensure safety and compliance, says Pengkalan Kota assemblyman Wong Yuee Harng.
He said the LRT construction is a large-scale infrastructure project that operates under a strict control and monitoring system.
“They have their own instruments installed at the construction sites. If there is any breach of limits, the contractors will conduct self-monitoring and make immediate improvements,” Wong told reporters.
He said contractors under the Penang Transport Master Plan (PTMP), particularly the SRS Consortium, are using advanced electronic systems to monitor site access and worker safety.
“From Lebuhraya Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu, we can see that their worksites are equipped with electronic entry systems. The workers are always under safety supervision,” he said.

Wong added that the LRT team also holds regular coordination meetings with elected representatives in affected areas to provide updates and gather feedback.
“The LRT representatives meet with us from time to time. The sessions are held whenever there are new developments. For instance, they briefed me when they began fencing off sections along the route so that we could inform residents and handle inquiries efficiently,” he added.
Wong explained the purpose of these meetings is to ensure local service centres are fully aware of the project’s latest progress and can act as a bridge between residents and the project team.
Wong said the SRS Consortium had also reminded the public to use the MRT hotline for any complaints or feedback. The hotline is 1-800-88-6782, while feedback can also be emailed to [email protected].
Wong urged both residents and road users to utilise the hotline to report any issues related to construction works, especially as more traffic diversions are expected in the coming months.
“We are heading into a challenging phase, but we hope the public will understand that today’s inconvenience is for tomorrow’s benefit,” he said.
