THE Nine Emperor Gods Festival, regarded as one of the more prominent Taoist celebrations in Penang, will take place from Oct 21 to 29.

Over the course of nine days, devotees will observe a vegetarian diet, recite scriptures to seek blessings, and participate in various festive activities

In preparation for the celebration,Penang Island City Council (MBPP) is accepting applications for temporary licenses to operate vegetarian stalls. The application period is open until Oct 28.

Penang Island City Council (MBPP) councillor Tan Soo Siang, who also serves as the Alternate Chairman of the Public Health and Licensing Committee, said that as of last week, the council had received a total of 100 applications.

Of these, Tan said that 40 have been approved, while the remaining applications are still being processed.

“The licence fee is RM1 per day for every 40sq ft, with a waste collection fee of RM6 for each stall of the same size.

“Meanwhile, the canopy fee is RM100 for up to 400 square feet, and RM200 for 400 to 1,200 square feet,” Tan said.

“Applicants are encouraged to apply online at ulesen.mbpp.gov.my; alternatively, they can walk in to the Licensing Department or call 04-2638818 ext. 3107/308/309/310 for details,” she added.

Tan also shared that a total of 125 applications were received in 2024, six of which were rejected due to unsuitable locations or potential traffic congestion.

“We hope that everyone will cooperate fully with MBPP to ensure the area remains clean and to help maintain a peaceful and orderly environment during the festival,” she added.
