SPORT stacking is gaining popularity worldwide, and a group of five students and two coaches from Penang made Malaysia proud by shining at the recently concluded World Sport Stacking Championship (WSSA-Switzerland), held from April 25 to April 27.

The three-day event marked a significant achievement for the Penang contingent.

Speaking to Buletin Mutiara, sports advocate Baby Goh shared that the team is scheduled to arrive back in Penang tomorrow at 6.40pm.

“This sport, which has been gaining popularity, is especially well-liked among children as it helps stimulate brain activity and supports overall growth.

“I am a strong believer in and supporter of this sport, especially as our former state executive councillor Datuk Seri Chong Eng encouraged senior citizens to participate as well.

“This sport helps coordinate both hands and the brain, improving flexibility and attentional coordination between fingers,” she added.

Goh also shared the inspiring journey of her 13-year-old granddaughter, Maggie Kiu, who was one of the participants in the championship. Maggie’s interest in sport stacking began when she was in Standard Two.

“During the Covid-19 pandemic, Maggie wasn’t allowed to attend school due to health concerns. As a hyperactive child, she would jump from chairs to tables or disturb her younger brother at home,” Goh recalled.

“To help manage her energy and focus, Maggie’s mother, Debbie Lim, introduced her to sport stacking through online coaching. From that point on, her interest grew, and she did most of her training online.”

Over the years, Goh said Maggie participated in both local and national competitions, winning several medals. She was even selected to coach her primary school’s cup stacking team.

Maggie was then chosen to represent Penang at the national level, and her consistent performance earned her a place on Team Malaysia for the World Championship in Switzerland. Her dream of winning a gold medal finally came true.

Alongside Maggie, other team members included Yeap Yu Chun, Nicole Ong, Soon Ying Ying, Khoh Yuan Qi, and coaches Jessica and Foo.
