THE Penang government is aiming to elevate dragon boat racing from a once-a-year highlight into a year-round sporting attraction, expanding beyond the annual Penang International Dragon Boat Regatta (PIDBR) traditionally held at the end of the year.
State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai, who is also the chairman of PIDBR, said the state government is actively supporting local dragon boat clubs, nurturing young athletes and collaborating with national as well as international partners to ensure the sport’s sustainable growth.

“Our goal is not merely to host competitions, but to create an ecosystem where talent is nurtured, opportunities are abundant and the passion for dragon boat racing can flourish for generations to come,” he said.
Wong announced that Penang is expected to host three dragon boat races in 2026.
These include the Penang Mini Dragon Boat Race in January, the Penang Chinese Swimming Club Dragon Boat Race in May, and the Penang International Dragon Boat Regatta in November.
He was speaking at the Penang Mini Dragon Boat Race 2026 held at the Penang Water Sports Centre in Tanjung Bungah today.

Also present was Malaysian Dragon Boat Federation president Girlie Tan.
Wong described dragon boat racing as the ultimate team sport, built on trust, rhythm and unity.
“Every paddler matters, every stroke counts and every team member contributes to the success of the whole.
“That spirit mirrors what we aspire to see in Penang which is a community that works together, values cooperation and celebrates inclusiveness,” he said.
He added that sports tourism is becoming an increasingly important driver of Penang’s growth.
“When athletes, teams and their families travel here to compete, they experience far more than just the race; they experience Penang itself.
“They savour our world-famous cuisine, learn about our unique culture, meet our warm and friendly people and enjoy the beauty of our coastline. This is how sport can showcase Penang to the world and leave a lasting impression,” he said.
