THE construction of Penang’s first-ever age-friendly neighbourhood park, the Lengkok Nipah Neighbourhood Park at Taman Lip Sin in Bayan Lepas is now 99% complete, marking a major milestone for the local community.
Penang Island City Council (MBPP) councillor Chan Soon Aun said that only minor finishing touches remain before the park is officially ready for public use.
“Major components of the park have been completed, with only minor cosmetic works still ongoing.

“We expect the project to be fully completed within this month, and the official opening ceremony is planned for November,” Chan said when contacted by Buletin Mutiara today.
He added that many residents, particularly senior citizens, have already begun using the facilities and expressed pride in having such a thoughtful community space nearby.
Covering nearly one acre, the Lengkok Nipah Neighbourhood Park is a joint initiative by MBPP and the Bayan Baru parliamentary constituency office, representing a key step towards creating inclusive and sustainable public spaces for residents of all ages.
The groundbreaking ceremony took place in January this year, with the project cost amounting to RM700,000.
MBPP mayor Datuk A. Rajendran previously highlighted that many elderly residents, whether living in urban or rural areas, face challenges such as mobility limitations, lack of age-friendly infrastructure, and difficulty accessing essential services.
“This park aims to address these challenges. It reflects MBPP’s commitment to building inclusive environments that promote community well-being, active living, and sustainability,” he said.
The Lengkok Nipah Neighbourhood Park has been carefully designed to cater to residents of all ages particularly older adults with a range of thoughtful features and amenities.
These include pedestrian walkways, children’s playground equipment, exercise stations, a stage, a plaza, an amphitheatre, a garden entrance statement, concrete benches, wheelchair-accessible seating, wheelchair-friendly pathways, motorcycle barriers, concrete bollards, park lighting, and tree planting to enhance greenery.
