PENANG’s tourism industry has not only bounced back from the Covid-19 pandemic — it has exceeded pre-pandemic performance, marking a remarkable milestone in the state’s recovery and growth.

State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai announced that Penang International Airport (PIA) now operates 320 weekly international flights, surpassing the 284 recorded in February 2019, just before the pandemic.

“If we look further back to February 2016, when there were only 208 international flights per week, the growth is an astounding 54%, a testament to Penang’s rising connectivity and international appeal.

“According to data from the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM), in 2024, PIA has become the second busiest airport in Malaysia, just behind Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).

“This milestone speaks volumes about Penang’s resilience, strategic planning, and increasing importance in the national tourism landscape.

“Our national aviation champion, Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) — encompassing Malaysia Airlines, Firefly, and Amal — is also onboard in a major way.

“Thus, I look forward to MAG consolidating and affirming PIA as Malaysia’s second gateway,” Wong told a press conference at St Giles The Wembley Hotel in George Town today.

Also present were Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) national president Nigel Wong, MATTA Penang Chapter chairman Carolyn Leong and MATTA Fair Penang organising chairman Datuk Hamzah Rahmat.

Wong also announced that the highly anticipated MATTA Fair Penang 2025 will take place on May 24 and 25 at Setia SPICE Arena, from 10am to 9pm.

Wong (centre) also announced that the highly anticipated MATTA Fair Penang 2025 will take place on May 24 and 25 at Setia SPICE Arena, from 10am to 9pm.

He described the event as a benchmark for travel excellence and a catalyst for revitalising the tourism sector.

“I invite everyone — families, solo travellers, honeymooners, corporate buyers, and explorers — to come and be part of this experience. Let us rediscover Malaysia, let us dream about the world, and let us connect through the joy of travel.

“I wish the MATTA Fair Penang 2025 the greatest success. Congratulations to MATTA, their sponsors, state tourism bodies, exhibitors, and partners who have made this possible,” said Wong.

Meanwhile, Nigel said for the first time in the history of the MATTA Fair Penang, a dedicated ‘domestic section’ will be introduced, highlighting Malaysia’s rich and diverse tourism offerings.

Nigel (left) said for the first time in the history of the MATTA Fair Penang, a dedicated ‘domestic section’ will be introduced, highlighting Malaysia’s rich and diverse tourism offerings.

“Occupying two-thirds of the Level 3 Concourse at Setia SPICE Arena, this new section will spotlight experiences ranging from eco-adventures in Sarawak to culinary journeys in Johor, family holidays in Terengganu, and heritage trails in Penang.

“This initiative underscores MATTA’s strong commitment to revitalising local tourism and encouraging exploration of lesser-known destinations across Malaysia.

“As a strategic partner to the upcoming Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026) campaign, MATTA continues to play a vital role in realising Malaysia’s tourism goals.

“Through our nationwide member network, collaborative state partnerships, and public events like the MATTA Fair Penang, we are laying the groundwork to welcome the world to our shores,” said Nigel.

Nigel added that this year’s travel fair is expected to draw around 45,000 visitors and generate RM78 million in sales over the two days.

“After all, the MATTA Fair Penang 2025 is set to be more than just a travel fair. It will be a celebration of experiences, where travel dreams take flight, bookings turn into journeys, and meaningful partnerships are formed.

“From local families and solo adventurers to corporate buyers and international travellers, all are invited to take part in this dynamic event.

“Admission to the MATTA Fair Penang is free, and all are welcome to attend to take advantage of incredible offers and find inspiration for their next journey locally and abroad,” he added.
