THE Penang Hindu Endowment Board (PHEB) has begun comprehensive preparations for the upcoming Thaipusam celebration, which is expected to draw a massive turnout next month.

PHEB vice-chairman Senator Dr R.A. Lingeshwaran said the board is currently liaising closely with the police and several local agencies to finalise logistical arrangements aimed at ensuring a smoother and safer experience for devotees.

Dr Lingeshwaran said the board is currently liaising closely with the police and several local agencies to finalise logistical arrangements aimed at ensuring a smoother and safer experience for devotees.

“We are working on measures to shorten the waiting time at the various thaneer panthals (refreshment stalls) along Jalan Utama leading to the Waterfall Hilltop Temple.

“Our aim is to reduce the average stop from about 20 minutes to around 10 minutes in order to minimise overcrowding,” he said.

Dr Lingeshwaran added that discussions are also underway with the Penang Hill Corporation (PHC) to temporarily open certain roads that are currently closed due to cable car construction works, as part of efforts to ease traffic congestion during the festival.

“In addition, we have another plan to reduce congestion at the Waterfall Hilltop Temple itself.

“Once devotees arrive, they will be required to walk around the temple before entering, ensuring that the crowd continues to move instead of remaining stationary,” he told Buletin Mutiara when contacted today.

On medical preparedness, Dr Lingeshwaran said PHEB is coordinating with the Penang Health Department (JKNPP) to increase the number of doctors and volunteers on duty, including personnel from St John Ambulance Malaysia (SJAM), to provide immediate assistance should any devotees faint or require medical attention.

He also advised senior citizens, persons with disabilities and families with young children to visit the Waterfall Hilltop Temple earlier, before the peak of the Thaipusam celebrations, to avoid overcrowding.

“Transportation assistance will be provided by PHEB for those who require it.

“This year, we are expecting more than one million devotees, including tourists. With the introduction of direct flights from Chennai to Penang, we anticipate a significant increase in both devotees and visitors for this year’s Thaipusam celebration,” he said.
