SERVICE Civil International (SCI) Malaysia, Penang Chapter with the endorsement of the state government and cooperation with the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) had the Penang Peace Run 2018 which was flagged off at Youth Park this morning.

Joining the 1,800 participants of which 350 of them are people with special needs are the Guest of Honour, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, MBPP mayor Datuk Yew Tung Seang and Pulau Tikus assemblyman Chris Lee Chun Kit.

The first Peace Run was launched in 1989 at the same venue (Youth Park) and for this year, it’s the 29th Peace Run organised in Penang. During each Peace Run, around 2,000 to 2,500 runners – including the physically challenged, underprivileged and the able-bodied – participated. Free food and refreshments have always been provided for the ‘special children and orphans’ in these runs throughout the years.

Upon the conclusion of the Peace Run, a ‘Peace Concert’ will be performed by the various special schools. For this year, three special schools are taking part in performing for the public.

At the end of the event, a lucky draw session will normally be conducted. Prizes for these draws are normally donated by well-wishers.

The Run is called Peace Run because one of the objectives of SCI is to promote “Peace & Harmony” within and without between the various people in the community.
