THE Sri Sathya Sai Baba Centre of Penang is set to mark a historic spiritual milestone this November with a month-long series of activities commemorating the 100th birth anniversary of Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba.

Hailed as a “once-in-a-lifetime occasion” by devotees, the celebrations will see seven Sai centres across Penang unite for an extensive line-up of community-based programmes that emphasise service, spirituality, and education.

Sri Sathya Sai Baba Centre of Penang chairman Dr M. Rethanavelu shared that preparations for the centenary celebrations had been ongoing for several months, involving hundreds of volunteers and devotees who are working together with a shared sense of purpose.

“The devotees of Bhagavan consider these centenary celebrations as a once-in-a-lifetime event.

“As such, our centre, together with other Sai centres in Penang, has initiated a month-long celebration throughout November 2025 to spread love, service, and unity among the community,” he told Buletin Mutiara during an exclusive interview on Oct 30 at the Harbour Trade Centre in Macallum Street Ghaut.

The celebrations began with a dry ration distribution for 100 families at SJK (T) Ladang Jawi on Nov 2 (8am–1pm), which was completed, followed by a medical and service camp at Dewan Indah Kembara, Universiti Sains Malaysia, on Nov 9 (9am–4pm).

On Nov 8–9, a state-level 24-hour ‘bhajans’ session for world peace and prosperity will take place at the Sungai Nibong Centre, bringing together devotees for continuous chanting and prayers.

Other key activities include a community service event at SMK Prai on Nov 16 (9am–1pm) and a feeding programme for 100 underprivileged individuals on Women’s Day, Nov 19, organised by the centre’s Ladies Wing.

Throughout November, all Sai centres will hold daily spiritual activities, such as Gayatri chanting, Suprabhatham, Namavali, Nagar Sangeertan, and bhajans, starting from 5.30am at SSSBC Penang and its sister centres in Sungai Nibong and Relau.

The month-long celebration will culminate in a grand public function on Nov 23 at The Ramakrishna Ashram, Penang, from 6pm onwards.

It is expected to be officiated by the state Housing and Environment Committee chairman Datuk Seri Sundarajoo Somu.

The evening will feature Vedic chants, drama performances, bhajans, and cultural presentations by students of the Education in Human Values (EHV) programme.

Among the highlights are honouring of senior devotees, recognition of public personalities for community service, and donations to five public institutions.

A special moment of pride will be the launch of a 100-page Souvenir Magazine, marking the spiritual journey of Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba and the impact of his teachings.

“This commemorative magazine will not only trace Bhagavan’s divine journey, from His birth, declaration as an Avatar, and life mission to His Mahasamadhi but will also serve as a guide for readers to elevate their spiritual progress.

“It includes articles about Puttaparthi, our organisation’s global service projects, valuable teachings, and inspiring contributions from devotees across Penang,” Dr Rethanavelu explained.

The magazine’s content has been compiled by contributors from all seven participating Sai centres in Penang, reflecting the collective devotion and unity of the Sai fraternity.

Rethanavelu, who has served as chairman for seven years and as state coordinator since 2023, said the celebrations carry deep meaning beyond mere rituals, as they reaffirm the organisation’s timeless principle that “Service to Man is Service to God.”

“After joining the Sai organisation, I personally experienced a transformation,” he shared candidly.

A place that brings inner peace and healing.

“I learned to overcome anger, hatred, and jealousy, and found inner peace and equanimity.

“That is the essence of Bhagavan’s teachings, to see divinity in everyone and serve with love.”

He added that the centenary celebration is fully funded through the goodwill of members and donors.

“We did not actively solicit funds.

“Every contribution came from the heartfelt generosity of devotees and sponsors who believe in Swami’s mission. The celebration itself is an offering of love,” he said.

Banners and posters will be placed at central locations, including the Krishna Temple and major roads across Penang to raise public awareness of the celebration.

Dr Rethnavelu said youth and education play a key role in the Sai movement’s activities. The centre’s Education in Human Values (EHV) programme, held every Saturday at 5.30pm, has nurtured many young individuals through structured lessons in morality, spirituality, and service.

“Our EHV classes are not just about teaching values; they are about moulding character.

“The youth and Wanita (ladies) wing are the backbone of our organisation, supporting every activity with energy and sincerity,” he further added.

The Penang centre also conducts regular weekly sessions: Tabla classes on Tuesdays (7.30–8pm), Bharatanatyam on Wednesdays (7.00–8pm), Gayatri chanting on Thursdays (8pm), and Bhajans every Saturday (7.15pm onwards) following EHV classes.

The Sri Sathya Sai Organisation in Malaysia, operating under the global Sathya Sai mission, welcomes members from all backgrounds and ethnicities.

“Our centres are open to everyone, regardless of race or religion.

“Bhagavan’s message transcends all boundaries — it is about love, peace, and selfless service,” Dr Rethanavelu emphasised.

With seven centres uniting across Penang and an expected attendance of over 500 devotees and well-wishers, the upcoming centenary celebration stands as a testament to enduring faith and harmony.

“We invite the public to join us on this joyous journey.

“May all who attend experience peace, happiness, and the divine bliss that Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba taught us to share with the world,” Dr Rethanavelu said warmly.
