THE two siblings badly injured in a road accident in Sungai Bakap last February are making good progress in their studies, according to Senator Dr Lingeshwaran R. Arunasalam.
Six months after the tragedy, Lingeshwaran visited Darshan Murugan, seven, and his younger sister Kavarjitha Murugan, five, to check on their well-being and academic progress, although they have yet to return to school.
The children were on their way to school when the motorcycle they were riding with their uncle was involved in an accident.
As a result, Darshan sustained severe injuries to his left arm, losing full function, while Kavarjitha lost her right leg below the knee.
“They have shown strong enthusiasm for learning and growing self-confidence. Seeing them still smiling despite such a huge challenge is a lesson in resilience and hope. Sometimes, a small act of kindness can make a big difference in someone’s life,” Lingeshwaran said.
From the day of the accident, he took the initiative to assist the family by accompanying them throughout hospital treatment and ensuring they received necessary support after discharge.
Since the children were unable to attend school for nearly two months due to their injuries, Lingeshwaran sponsored a private tutor to teach them at home in core subjects, including Malay, English, Mathematics, Science, and Tamil.
The tutor visited three times a week, spending 1.5 hours with each child, with the initial six months fully sponsored by Lingeshwaran.
Their grandmother, who was present during Lingeshwaran’s visit, expressed deep gratitude for the compassion shown. The tears she shed were not of sorrow but of hope and thankfulness for a better future.
Lingeshwaran emphasised that education is every child’s right, regardless of their circumstances, and reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring these siblings do not fall behind in their studies.
