State DAP chairman confirms unanimous decision on Penang candidates

DESPITE ongoing claims by a former DAP assemblyman that the recently announced candidates in Penang had the intervention of ‘hidden hands’ for the upcoming state polls, Penang DAP chairman Chow Kon Yeow said the candidate list was agreed unanimously by the party’s central executive committee (CEC).

Declining to comment further about the claims, Chow said Penang DAP accepts the list announced by the party’s CEC, which was made up of five members.

DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke announced the 19 candidates who will be contesting in Penang at Jen Hotel in George Town on Tuesday (July 25).

In Penang, we accept the decision. Moving forward, as I have mentioned previously, we hope the candidates will work hard and be engaged in productive campaigning towards polling day (Aug 12).

“We understand that there have been several individuals who have voiced out their discontentment over the list, to the extent that we have seen a former DAP member who has quit the party and is planning to contest as an independent.

“This is not something new as it happens all the time when such an issue arises in the party.

“We have heard a few voices in the past few days and we will handle the matter professionally at the party level,” Chow, who is also the caretaker Penang Chief Minister, told a press conference after officiating the Fire Safety Seminar organised by the state Fire and Rescue Department Malaysia (JBPM).

The seminar, which was attended by some 850 individuals from different backgrounds, such as architects, consultants, contractors and representatives from various agencies, was aimed at highlighting several important and relevant topics about fire safety.
