THE proposal to build another Centralised Labour Quarters (CLQ) in Bukit Tambun has met with strong opposition from its state representative.

Goh Choon Aik (PH–Bukit Tambun) said the latest application involves a proposed CLQ at Vortex Business Park, located next to Taman Merpati Indah.

“Bukit Tambun has effectively become a ‘hub’ for foreign workers,” Goh said, noting that several CLQs are already operating in the constituency.

“These include facilities at Jalan Kawasan Perindustrian Bukit Minyak, Jalan Perusahaan Valdor, Nafiri Industrial Park, Valdor Industrial Park, Penang Science Park South, Batu Kawan Industrial Park and Batu Kawan Industrial Park 3.

“As the constituency that accommodates the highest number of foreign workers in Penang, I believe I am the most qualified and responsible state representative to express a firm stance on this proposed project,” he said during the Budget debate at the State Legislative Assembly today.

Goh stressed that the proposed CLQ site sits in the middle of Vortex Business Park and directly beside an existing low-cost apartment block.

“What has angered the local residents is the unresolved congestion at the SJK (C) Keng Koon intersection, which has yet to see a proper solution.

“If this foreign workers’ quarters project is approved, Jalan Batu Kawan, Jalan Bukit Tambun and Jalan Perindustrian Bukit Minyak 8 from Penang Science Park will be pushed to the brink, causing severe traffic paralysis,” he said.

He emphasised that he is voicing the concerns of affected residents and road users.

“Therefore, as the elected representative of Bukit Tambun, I strongly oppose the construction of this new CLQ,” Goh said firmly.
