THE newly-opened Lin Xiang Xiong Art Gallery at The Light Waterfront in Gelugor was raised during the State Legislative Assembly Sitting in Light Street earlier this morning, with assemblymen debating its cultural inclusivity and environmental impact.

The gallery, dedicated to the works of internationally acclaimed Southeast Asian artist Lin Xiang Xiong, represents a major private sector initiative aimed at enriching Penang’s cultural ecosystem.

Zulkefli Bakar (PN – Penanti) asked whether the gallery would incorporate elements of Penang’s diverse cultural heritage and how its construction above the sea might affect fishermen whose livelihoods depend on the coastal waters.

Responding, Wong Hon Wai (PH – Paya Terubong) clarified that the Lin Xiang Xiong Art Gallery is a fully private initiative, financed and managed without the use of public funds.

“This project does not utilise public funds, as it is entirely financed by the private sector. The gallery has already obtained approval from the local authority, the Penang Island City Council (MBPP), with input from relevant agencies including the Public Works Department (JKR), Marine Department, and Fisheries Department.

“I believe the concerns raised have been considered, and necessary steps have been taken to address potential issues,” Wong said.

While the specific programmes and cultural elements to be featured have not yet been officially announced, Wong noted that the state government views the initiative positively.

“I believe the concerns raised have been considered, and necessary steps have been taken to address potential issues.

“The state appreciates initiatives that enrich the cultural landscape and support Penang’s aspiration to become a regional hub for arts and culture,” he added.
