THE recently concluded ‘Suyamvaram’ matchmaking programme, which drew participants from across Malaysia, has been successfully held for the fourth consecutive year.

Organised by the Penang Hindu Association (PHA) in collaboration with the Sri Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple, Penang, the organisers credited the success to strong public support.

‘Suyamvaram’ refers to matchmaking based on traditions that have endured for centuries in India.

PHA president Datuk P. Murugiah Mohan said the association decided to revive the practice to ensure its origins are not lost in time.

“With the passage of time, these traditions have to be adapted to suit modern society. Since the inception of this programme, a total of 10 marriages have been successfully solemnised,” he said in a press release.

The half-day event, held on Aug 30 at the Sri Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple, Penang, saw the participation of 112 adults, including 10 walk-ins, accompanied by their parents and family members.

Participants were allowed to view potential life partners’ profiles, followed by horoscope compatibility checks conducted by appointed astrologers in line with tradition. Upon the astrologers’ approval, family members were invited to meet and discuss the prospects of marriage. Most families expressed satisfaction with the outcomes of their discussions and indicated they would update the organisers with further details soon.

State executive councillor for Housing and Environment Datuk Seri Sundarajoo Somu, who officiated the programme, offered assistance to couples married through the initiative in purchasing homes under state government projects.

Meanwhile, Jelutong MP RSN Rayer pledged discounts on wedding hall rentals in all temples managed by the Penang Hindu Endowment Board for couples successfully matched through the programme.

Other dignitaries in attendance included Senator Dr Lingeshwaran.

Murugiah said the Penang Hindu Association, together with the Sri Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple, hopes more unmarried Hindu adults will take part in future editions of the programme.

“Applicants can be assured that confidentiality will be strictly observed,” he added.
