THIS year Penang Amateur Athletic Association continued its tradition of organising the ‘Tanjung Run’ in conjunction with Penang Governor Tun Dr. Abdul Rahman Abbas’ birthday.

The 10-km run saw some 700 participants who gathered at the starting line at Sepoy Lines Road on a warm and bright Saturday morning of Oct 6.

The Governor’s official residence (Seri Mutiara) was situated along the route for the race where the runners had to pass by and return to Sepoy Lines Road (also the finishing line) to complete the race.

Exco for Tourism Development, Heritage, Culture & Arts Yeoh Soon Hin, who represented Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow for the prize giving ceremony, commended the initiative by the association to promote a healthy lifestyle through events such as this.

“This year marks Penang Amateur Athletic Association’s 32nd year of organising the ‘Tanjung Run’.

“The run is a good example where through participation, we are celebrating the Governor’s birthday, engaging in physical activities and contributing towards community programmes from the proceeds, a 3-in-1 package.

“It is also aligned with the cleaner, greener, healthier and safer Penang campaign,” said Yeoh during the prize giving ceremony at Seri Mutiara.

Lions Club of Tanjung Penang is the co-organiser of the event and the proceeds from the run were channeled to the club for its community programme at Penang Hill, which is the P84 Rest Area Refurbishment.

A mock cheque of RM10,000 was presented to the Lions Club of Tanjung Penang representatives during the prize giving ceremony.

Also present were Penang Amateur Athletic Association chairman Datuk Syed Mohd Aidid Syed Murtaza and Lions Club district governor Datuk Ir. Nee Say Yeow.

At the event, Syed presented a wrist watch which he wore to the Governor as a gesture of love and appreciation for the latter’s contributions to the state.
