PENANG welcomed another milestone in its hospitality sector with the grand opening of The Millen Penang, the state’s first Autograph Collection hotel by Marriott International.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, who officiated the launch, said the establishment symbolises how far Penang has come as a magnet for the global tourism and hospitality industry.

“To some, this may simply be the launch of another hotel. But to me, it represents something much greater.

“It is a clear sign of how far Penang has transformed into a natural magnet for the global hospitality industry,” Chow said.

He stressed that the mushrooming of prestigious hotels in Penang reflected not just tourist demand but also the strength of Penang’s overall ecosystem, from its Unesco World Heritage sites and vibrant culture to its famed food and festivals, supported by a skilled hospitality workforce.

Chow added that the growth must also bring meaningful impact to Penangites.

“I hope it translates into more meaningful opportunities for our people, creating new jobs for Penangites, while uplifting the wider community.

“From artisans and hawkers to restaurants and young entrepreneurs, this is how tourism can truly become an engine of shared prosperity,” he said.

Chow also lauded HNG Capital and Marriott International for realising the project, describing the hotel as a benchmark in luxury while honouring Penang’s heritage.

“The Millen embodies the Penang spirit. Inspired by our colonial past, enriched by cultural artistry, and carrying the legacy of Millionaire’s Row, the hotel offers an experience that is both timeless and contemporary,” he added.

He highlighted the significance of the launch’s timing, coinciding with the Golden Week holidays and ahead of Visit Malaysia Year 2026, which is expected to further boost tourist arrivals.

Looking ahead, Chow reminded tourism players to embrace sustainability, digitalisation, and innovation.

“If we succeed, Penang will not only welcome more visitors, but will also stand out as a forward-looking and responsible destination in Malaysia and beyond,” he said.

Meanwhile, Marriott International’s Malaysia market vice-president George Varughese said the opening of The Millen Penang was a milestone for both the company and Penang.

“The Millen is not only the first Autograph Collection hotel in Penang, but it also represents a shared dream, to create a hotel that reflects Penang’s rich heritage, its culture, and its modern spirit, while setting a new standard of luxury for the island,” he said.

Varughese emphasised that the hotel was envisioned as more than just a place to stay.

Together, we imagined a place where travelers would not only stay but truly connect with Penang, its stories, its flavors, its soul.

“Today, looking around, I believe we have brought that vision to life,” he said.

The event was also attended by Air Putih assemblyman Lim Guan Eng, Penang State Legislative Assembly Speaker Datuk Seri Law Choo Kiang, HNG Capital Group executive chairman Tan Sri H’ng Bok San, HNG Capital Group CEO Datuk Sean H’ng, and HNG Group CFO Datin Seri Jessica H’ng.
