THE Treasures of the Nanhai: Heritage × Art × Community exhibition held in conjunction with the 400th anniversary of the Wanli Shipwreck is now open to the public at Think City @ UAB Building from Dec 5 to 14, between 10am and 4pm daily.
The international showcase brings together 19 artists from seven regions, offering a vibrant reflection of Penang’s ever-evolving creative landscape.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, who officiated the opening ceremony today, said the exhibition’s 400-year milestone is especially meaningful, as Penang’s past and future continue to be shaped by the sea, by trade, and by the convergence of cultures.

“Today, we gather not only to launch an exhibition, but to reconnect with a story that has travelled across four centuries of maritime history.

“The Wanli ship, which sank in 1625 carrying porcelain from the famed Jingdezhen kilns, left behind more than 9,000 kilograms of recovered artefacts.

“Thanks to the dedication of archaeologists and scholars, these objects now offer us an extraordinary window into a vibrant era of trade, cultural exchange, and human movement across Asia,” Chow said.
He noted that the story of the Wanli ship resonates deeply with Penang’s identity.
“As a historic port shaped by migration, commerce, and intercultural exchange, Penang has long been anchored in the same maritime currents that once carried the Wanli vessel,” he added.
Chow also highlighted that the 19 participating artists have reimagined the historic relics through diverse mediums, including painting, ink, installation, calligraphy, sculpture, and contemporary craft.
“Their works remind us that heritage is not static. It evolves, inspires, and continues to spark new ideas,” he said.
He expressed hope that young people, in particular, will see the exhibition as a reminder that understanding the past helps illuminate the future.
“May this exhibition deepen our appreciation of the maritime world that shaped this region, and strengthen our shared resolve in Penang and beyond to preserve and celebrate the cultural heritage that connects us,” he said.
Also present were Penang Art District general manager Kenny Ng, Malaysia-China Chamber of Commerce (MCCC) Penang branch deputy president Datuk Teh Eng Hin, and Treasures of the Nanhai — Wanli 400th Anniversary Exhibition curator Elain Wong.
