WHEN it comes to maximising the true potential of a state with a natural setting that calls for a perfect morning run, Penang easily tops the list!

The annual Occupy Beach Street (OBS) 5km Fun Run returns for the 2026 edition, and this time it has set a record, attracting over 3,000 participants from 20 countries.

The flag-off ceremony was officiated by Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, who applauded the community spirit of the people and was impressed with the energy and enthusiasm displayed by individuals, from young to old.

“This is a strong reflection of Penang’s vibrancy and international appeal, and there could be no better way than to usher in the Lunar New Year with such an exciting event.

“The festive season is more than a celebration; it embodies our traditions, family bonds and unity.

“Today’s run builds on that festive atmosphere, transforming our city into a vibrant celebration of health, togetherness, and joy,” he said in his speech before flagging off the run at Jalan Padang Kota earlier this morning.

Individuals gathered as early as 6am for the run, which was officially flagged off at 7am, accompanied by the traditional Lion Dance performance.

In a related development, Chow shared that the Penang government, throughout this Chinese New Year period, has some 30 programmes planned for the public, each happening on different dates, not including the ones by non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

“We encourage the public to participate in all these programmes, where the schedules will be shared accordingly from time-to-time in designated social media platforms,” he added.

Chow also commended the overwhelming reception that Penang often receives through cultural festivals, citing the recently held Miao Hui Festival in George Town, where it attracted some 200,000 individuals of various nationalities from around the globe.

“This is a perfect example of what makes Penang stand out, and this year, we are glad to have received participation from the Lebuh Aceh Mosque and Sri Mahamariamman Temple.

“It is through such efforts we are able to celebrate our togetherness amidst the differences that we have, in terms of our religions, culture, and so on,” Chow added.

Also present earlier were state Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai, Penang Island City Council (MBPP) mayor Datuk A. Rajendran, TLM Event managing director Jack Wong, and several MBPP councillors.
