THE Seberang Perai Municipal Council (MPSP) is committed to achieving the Penang state government’s desire to create a clean, green, healthier and safer state.

MPSP president Datuk Rozali Mohamud launched the workshop on effective plastic waste management with the purpose of providing exposure to the Seberang Perai residents on the best way of managing plastic waste and finding solutions from stakeholders on Aug 25.

“In Seberang Perai, a total of 13,777 tonnes of plastics were collected for recycling which is 4% of the total recyclable items of 345,329 tonnes,” Rozali said.

“Plastics contain toxic waste and when disposed everywhere, it will cause toxic waste to seep into the soil and thus pollute the water source.

“MPSP has also taken measures to reduce or recycle plastic waste so that the plastic is not discharged to the landfill.”

On another note, state State Welfare, Caring Society and Environment Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh encouraged the attendees to love the environment as how “we love ourselves”.

He urged them not to simply throw any rubbish at the roadside as well as at water catchment area.

“We should respect nature. We need the full support from all the people and let us create awareness together,” emphasised Phee.

The workshop was presented by Dr Tiew Kian Gee from University Kebangsaan Malaysia, followed by a group discussion especially on how to find a method or an effective way to reduce plastic pollution in the oceans and make use of disposable plastics and waste.
