PENANG today welcomed some of the world’s leading forensic experts at the opening of the International Convention of Forensic Medicine and Sciences (ICFMS) 2025, held at Bayview Hotel Georgetown.

The three-day convention, organised by the Department of Forensic Medicine at Penang Hospital and supported by the Malaysian Society of Forensic Medicine and Science (MaSForMS) and the Malaysian Association of Forensic Anthropology (MAFA), aims to deepen academic exchange and strengthen Malaysia’s standing in forensic science.

Officiating the event, state Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai, lauded the gathering as a milestone in both scientific advancement and public understanding.

“This event enhances public and professional understanding of forensic medicine, inspires future generations, and advances Malaysia’s forensic science landscape to new heights,” he said.

While forensic science is popularly associated with solving crimes, Wong mentioned that its contributions go far beyond criminal investigation.

“Forensic medicine is a bridge between medicine and law. It uncovers not just causes of death, but also hidden health risks. This knowledge can help society develop preventive strategies, extend life expectancy and improve public health.”

He cited the example of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), often referred to as “Economy Class Syndrome,” highlighting a real-life case shared in a book by a Malaysian forensic pathologist.

The case involved a fatal blood clot resulting from prolonged immobility, a preventable condition with greater awareness and proactive measures.

Wong also encouraged forensic practitioners to share their experiences and insights through writing, not only for academic audiences but for the general public as well.

Wong urged forensic professionals to bring their discipline “out of the cold confines of the autopsy room and into public consciousness”,with empathy and moral reflection.

The ICFMS 2025 is expected to draw participation from experts in forensic anthropology, odontology, radiology, and other subfields.

Also present were ICFMS advisor Datuk Dr Zahari Noor, Penang Health Department deputy director (Medical) Dr Premalosoni @ Maria, and Health Ministry Forensic Pathology Specialty head Dr Khairul Anuar Zainun.
