BEN’s Independent Grocer (B.I.G.) will open its first outlet in Penang and the northern region at Island 88 in Tanjung Tokong by November this year.
This marks B.I.G.’s seventh outlet in Malaysia since its establishment in 2011, with five outlets in Kuala Lumpur and one in Johor Bahru under TFP Retail Sdn Bhd, which manages several brands including The Food Merchant, Village Grocer, OTK Pasaraya, BSC Fine Foods and Leisure Grocer.
TFP Retail executive director Ivan Tan and Island 88 manager director Philip Law signed a Memorandum of Understanding at Island 88 today, witnessed by state executive councillor for Trade and National Unity, Goh Choon Aik.

Goh, who is also the Bukit Tambun assemblyman, congratulated both parties on their collaboration.
He said Island 88 is more than a redeveloped mall, describing it as an urban regeneration project that embraces a community-centred development approach, transforming a former retail mall into a vibrant destination that strengthens social interaction, cultural activities and the local economy.
Ben’s Independent Grocer, he added, is a premium supermarket chain in Malaysia commonly abbreviated as B.I.G., with the tagline “Eat. Drink. Shop.”
“From November onwards, residents can enjoy convenient access to a premium supermarket offering a wide range of local and international products.
“The collaboration between Island 88 and B.I.G. reflects strong confidence in Penang’s economic growth, consumer spending power and long-term market potential,” Goh said.

Law said they are thrilled that B.I.G. has chosen Island 88 as the home for its first outlet in Penang and the northern region, reinforcing Island 88’s commitment to delivering retail experiences and attracting distinguished brands that cater to the community’s evolving lifestyle needs.
He added that the partnership will not only elevate the shopping experience for Penang consumers but also contribute positively to the economic growth and vibrancy of Tanjung Tokong.
“This is more than just the introduction of a premium grocery retailer — it is a significant step forward in enhancing Island 88’s vision as a vibrant lifestyle destination that offers exceptional retail, dining and community experiences,” he said.
“Ben’s Independent Grocer is a highly respected brand known for its unique ‘Eat. Drink. Shop.’ philosophy, offering carefully curated imported groceries, premium food selections, fresh produce and a truly inspiring shopping environment.
“Their commitment to quality, innovation, and customer experience aligns perfectly with our mission at Island 88.”
He said customers can also look forward to an immersive experience through B.I.G.’s specialised themed sections, including Barn Butchery, Bay Seafood, B.Organic, and Malaya Kitchen, as well as an extensive range of quality products tailored for discerning food enthusiasts.

Speaking on behalf of TFP Retail, Tan said the company’s decision to establish B.I.G. at Island 88 reflects its strong confidence in the area’s growth potential and its belief that Island 88 will become a vibrant lifestyle destination for residents, visitors and surrounding communities.
He highlighted that TFP Retail is committed to redefining the supermarket experience by bringing together quality products, fresh selections, excellent service and a comfortable shopping environment that caters to the needs of modern families and communities.
“This is not simply about opening another supermarket. It is about creating a place where families can shop with convenience, discover a wide range of fresh and premium products, and enjoy a better everyday shopping experience,” Tan said.
He added that the opening of B.I.G. Supermarket will also create employment opportunities and generate greater economic activity for the area.
He said he looks forward to an exciting journey and working closely with partners and the local community to make the venture a long-term success.
Also present at the MoU signing ceremony were Island 88 chief executive officer Paul Law, Island 88 complex manager Cheong Sook Yeng, Business Development manager Nick Lee, Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH) national vice-president Datuk Khoo Boo Lim, and Penang Island City Council (MBPP) councillor Ooi Mei Mei.
