THE creative multimedia industry is booming to be one of the most sought-after industries in the world and Penang is moving towards that direction to attract prominent investors.

 

Shanghai-based intellectual property creation company, Left Pocket Creatives, has set up an office here at Wisma Yeap Chor Ee, with the aim to create excellent animation content for the Chinese and international market.

Founder and Left Pocket Studio chief executive officer Yu Xin said Left Pocket believed in developing high quality original content.

 

“We encourage the team to keep an open mind and be creative,” she said.

 

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the Left Pocket chose to set up its first Malaysian studio in Wisma Yeap Chor Ee, the renowned colonial heritage building, which is home to the tech and creative community in Penang.

 

“I am delighted to witness the opening ceremony of Left Pocket, the latest tenant of Wisma Yeap Chor Ee.

 

“The creative technology content ecosystem in the state is still very much in its infancy stage.

 

“Although we have institutions of higher learning to supply creative talents each year, the job opportunities in this field is lacking in Penang.

 

“Left Pocket has projected that it would create approximately 100 creative talent opportunities in the next four years,” he said during the opening ceremony today.

Chow said that the creative multimedia industry has a huge economic potential.

 

“Industrial research suggests that the total value of global animation industry will reach USD270 billion by next year (2020). Meanwhile, the global eSports industry is growing at a rate of 30% year-on-year and is forecasted to be a billion-dollar industry by the end of this year.

 

“I would like to commend investPenang for its efforts in attracting prominent investors such as Left Pocket Creatives, which could in turn boost the service sector in Penang,” he said.

 

Also present were investPenang chief executive officer Datuk Loo Lee Lian and Left Pocket Creatives general manager Zhu Lily.
