Celebrating culture through art

THE exuberant atmosphere of the ‘Land of Hornbills’ has been brought life in an art exhibition at Sokka Gakkai Malaysia (SGM Penang Branch) here.

Sixteen artists from Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand, brought out the essense of Sarawak through their paintings.

They had travelled to Sarawak last year.

A total of 50 soul-stirring art pieces are being displayed at the ‘Camaraderie in the Land of Hornbills’ art exhibition in Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah.

The exhibition is supported by ‘Muzium dan Galeri Tuanku Fauziah’, Universiti Sains Malaysia.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow expressed his hope for a similar exhibition to be held in Sarawak; showcasing the arts, heritage and culture of Penang.

Chow was responding to the request by Muzium dan Galeri Tuanku Fauziah curator and director Zolkurnian Hassan, who wanted the state government to support USM’s desire to bring the art exhibition over to Sarawak.

“Penang is hosting the exhibition about Sarawak by these sixteen artists, and I hope a similar exhibition on Penang and its people can be held over there (Sarawak) in-conjunction with USM’s 50th anniversary.

“Penang is a city that is rich in culture and art, although it has been modernised.

“The state still has its classical and historical elements.

“The development and promotion of art and culture must be given priority,” Chow said during the opening ceremony of the exhibition today.

The art exhibition is open daily until April 27 from 10am to 4pm.
