Damaged pedestrian bridge is being removed

THE Penang Island City Council (MBPP) is tearing down the iconic pedestrian bridge near the Penang ferry terminal after it was badly damaged by a crane this afternoon.

 

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said it has been decided that the council would have to remove the structure and that it would take a few hours.

 

The local council is removing the damaged structure.

 

“The process will begin at about 8pm today (Feb 5) and is scheduled to complete by midnight.

 

“Road users who plan to use Weld Quay to their destination are advised to use other alternative roads.

 

 

Part of the road in Weld Quay is closed to motorists.

 

“Part of the road in Weld Quay has been closed to ensure public safety,” Chow said.

 

It was reported that a crane that was transported by a trailer had crashed into the overhead pedestrian bridge at about 4pm today (Feb 5).
