THE Democratic Action Party (DAP), which is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, will refocus on its founding principles and ideals of building a “Malaysia for Malaysians,” says Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.

“The party believes in parliamentary democracy and in effecting change through the ballot box. That remains our firm commitment, and we have achieved much over the past six decades.

“The 60th anniversary will centre on these key principles, while inviting the people to evaluate and even criticise us where necessary, so that we remain true to our founding ideals — a Malaysia that belongs to all Malaysians,” said Chow, a member of the party’s Central Executive Committee (CEC).

He was responding to a reporter’s question on his message in conjunction with the party’s 60th anniversary celebration, after a press conference on the state government’s decision to establish a special task force to study the setting up of the Penang International Financial Centre (PIFC).

Chow highlighted core ideals such as equality, human rights, social and economic development, and a strong education system. He added that, as part of the government, the party is also venturing into initiatives such as the proposed international financial centre.

DAP officially launched its 60th anniversary celebrations yesterday (March 18), adopting the theme “Malaysia for Malaysians” to honour its six decades of political struggle while inspiring a new generation to contribute towards a more just, inclusive and prosperous nation.

In a statement, the party said its current position contrasts sharply with its earlier decades, as it now holds governing responsibilities at both state and federal levels.

The theme carries two core messages.

The first is a reaffirmation of its founding principles — to serve the people and defend the interests of workers, small traders, hawkers and the vulnerable.

The second serves as a guiding compass for nation-building, calling on all DAP members, especially those in government, to uphold these principles in shaping national policies and governance.

As part of the launch, DAP also unveiled its official anniversary logo and a dedicated website, enabling the public to follow updates on programmes planned throughout the year. These include nationwide engagements, party events and initiatives, culminating in a grand celebration in Kuala Lumpur on Sept 20.
