DELEGATES from the Perak government gained a deeper understanding on community development and gender inclusiveness during their trip to Penang.

Led by Perak Women and Family Development, Character Development and Community Welfare Committee chairman Wong May Ing, the group was warmly received by state executive council member Chong Eng at her office in Komtar today.

Chong Eng, who is the Penang Women and Family Development, Gender Inclusiveness and Non-Islamic Religious Affairs Committee chairman, said the Penang government encourages the society to provide more opportunities to women.

“Women must be given equal wages as men for work of equal value.

“They must be given equal opportunities without any gender bias; the right to make their own choices and decisions; freedom of speech and so on.

“Sexual violence against women must also be stopped,” Chong Eng said.

Wong said the delegation was keen to know more about the Penang Women’s Development Corporation (PWDC).

“We want to know more about community development, welfare and women participation in Penang,” she said.

PWDC chief executive officer Ong Bee Leng highlighted the programmes held for the women community over the past years, especially those on leadership and women empowerment.

Wong thanked Chong Eng and Ong for sharing their ideas at the end of the meeting.
