Educating students on science and the environment

TECH Dome Penang (TDP) has received the honour of being appointed by the Ministry of Energy, Science, Technology, Environment & Climate Change (MESTECC) as its partner to bring its outreach programme, ESTECC Education in Schools, to over 100,000 students in the northern states of Perlis, Kedah and Penang.

TDP education & exhibits manager Sean Lee Kuan Shern said it is quite a monumental task as TDP has to ideate, develop and fabricate the six interactive exhibits from scratch within three weeks for deployment from Sept 1 till the end of the school semester on Nov 22 this year.

Students learning how the earth’s magnetic field plays a vital role in our daily lives from animal migration to protecting the earth from the sun’s harsh solar wind.

He added that with the recent experience of setting up the Mini Science & Technology Discovery Centre (MSTDC) at AEON Mall in Nilai earlier this year and three years of experience conducting various outreach programmes, TDP managed to put everything together quickly.

“Being tasked to execute this outreach programme by MESTECC is a huge recognition for a fledgling science discovery centre such as TDP which just celebrated its third anniversary in July.

“As TDP continues to spread its wings to other states in Malaysia and countries in the region, it brings along with it Penang’s name and brand, a feat Penangites can be proud of,” said Lee.

Two teams were newly formed and trained to execute this special project, one covering Perlis, northern Kedah and Langkawi while another covering southern Kedah and mainland Penang.

So far, TDP has brought the six exhibits covering topics on Renewable Energy, Acid Rain, Microplastics, Magnetic Field, Fossil Fuels and Greenhouse Effect to 100 schools across the three states.

In conjunction with this special project, schools also have the option of visiting the science discovery centre at the Komtar Geodesic Dome for free until Oct 31 to explore, discover and experience science with the help of over 150 interactive science exhibits at TDP.

A total of 55 schools comprising 3,184 students have benefited from this special promotion.
