Environmental-friendly straws to be introduced in Penang

ENVIRONMENTAL-friendly straws are all set to be launched in Penang in just a few more days, says state Welfare, Caring Society and Environment Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh.

“We will be launching the straws which are made from starch and rice at the Penang International Green Conference & Exhibition (PIGCE) 2019 which will be held at the Gurney Paragon on Sept 27, 28 and 29.

“These are the researched and developed products of Penang-Malaysia and are our (state government) initiative towards reducing the plastic usage whilst promoting the going-green mindset.

“The straws are not reusable but are edible as they can be made into animal feed as well as the fertiliser for crops. You just need to dissolve them (straws) in a bowl of water for about one hour,’’ Phee told the media today.

He said the launching ceremony would be graced by the Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change Minister Yeo Bee Yin.

“The straws will be available at the market once it is officially launched at the upcoming Penang International Green Conference & Exhibition 2019 organised by the Penang Green Council,’’ Phee added.
