First foreign workers dormitory set up in Penang

PENANG now has its first foreign workers dormitory and it is in Bukit Minyak.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said that having such project could help address certain issues concerning foreign workers in Penang.

“Occasionally, we receive complaints from residents whose neighbours are foreign workers.

“Most of them lamented that the workers are involved in social habits such as drinking and bathing outside their rented accommodation.

“That is why we offered this solution – the workers dormitory to house foreign workers.

“The dormitory is also equipped with the necessary facilities,” Chow said after opening the Westlite Bukit Minyak in Bukit Minyak today.

The purpose-built workers accommodation asset is developed by Centurion Corporation Limited (Centurion). Westlite Dormitory is the subsidiary company of Centurion.

Westlite Dormitory is one of the leading independent dormitory owner-operators in Malaysia and Singapore.

Chow said Penang is an ideal hub for industries and is well-supported by the skilled workforce.

“Thank you, Centurion, for pioneering the development of Penang’s first Centralised Accommodation Transit (CAT).

“I believe that this project can somehow inspire the nation as outlined in the vision Penang2030,” Chow said.

The Westlite Bukit Minyak has a 38,919sq m gross floor area and 17,900sq m of land area.

It is strategically located next to a highway, providing easy access to the Bukit Minyak Industrial Park, Penang Science Park and Batu Kawan Industrial Park.

The project includes a 6,600-bed facility, a supermarket and a mini market, a food court, a barber shop, internet service and an outdoor exercise area.

Also present were Penang Local Government, Housing, Town and Country Planning Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo, state Health, Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry and Rural Development Committee chairman Dr Afif Bahardin, Batu Kawan MP Kasthuriraani Patto, several state assemblymen, Centurion chief operating officer Kelvin Teo, and Centurion managing director Tony Bin.
