A BACK lane linking Magazine Road and Gurdwara Road in George Town has become a popular spot among both local and foreign tourists.
The 100-metre or so stretch, fondly known as Flower Lane for its beautiful floral arches, has been maintained and beautified by M. Summit Group since 2017, after the company adopted it under the Penang government’s Back Lane Adoption Programme.

Recently, five information panels were installed along the lane, adding a new layer of interest for visitors. The panels feature short write-ups on topics such as the history of the area before The Granite Luxury Hotel was built, the existence of a Datuk Kong shrine, the role of back lanes in George Town, and a local tale about the “Flower Lady”, inspired by a naturally formed image on a nearby wall where the flaking paint and stains resemble a woman’s face.

“We embarked on this meaningful initiative that is close to our hearts last month — the addition of info panels along the back lane to share the neighbourhood’s charming stories,” said Ng Su-Ann, corporate communications manager of M. Summit Group.
“With the floral arches, engaging signages, and a touch of nostalgia, it’s our way of giving back to the community while celebrating Penang’s unique character and charm.
“What began as an effort to keep the area clean and safe has evolved into something much more special — a walkway that celebrates Penang’s vibrant heritage through a series of informative plaques, each telling a story of the city’s layered past.”

Through this ongoing initiative, M. Summit Group, which recently celebrated its 25th anniversary, reaffirms its commitment to community engagement and heritage preservation, transforming an ordinary back lane into a space where history, culture, and creativity come together — a living reminder of Penang’s enduring spirit.
