THE Penang government today reaffirmed its commitment towards environmental sustainability and community-driven action through the successful organisation of the “Fuyoh! Action is Hope!” 5KM Fun Run, held in conjunction with World Environment Day 2026.
The programme brought together participants from all walks of life, including families, youths, community groups, corporate partners and environmental advocates, demonstrating the growing public support for sustainable living and climate action.
Speaking at the event, Datuk Seri Sundarajoo Somu, the EXCO for Housing & Environment cum chairman of Penang Green Council, said that the event was more than just a recreational activity.

“Today is not just about running 5 kilometres, but about taking one meaningful step together towards a cleaner, greener and more sustainable future. Every individual action, no matter how small, has the power to create positive change for our planet,” he said.
Observed globally on June 5 each year, World Environment Day serves as an important platform to encourage stronger environmental awareness and action. This year’s theme, “Action is Hope,” reflects the belief that collective efforts and everyday choices can contribute significantly towards a healthier environment.
The Penang government continues to champion sustainable practices through initiatives such as the No Single-use Plastic (NSUP) campaign and the promotion of reusable alternatives as part of the state’s efforts to reduce waste generation and foster a circular economy.
The public was also encouraged to adopt simple yet impactful sustainable habits, including carrying reusable bags, using refillable water bottles, reducing single-use plastics and making environmentally conscious purchasing decisions.
The event featured a range of sustainability-focused activities, including interactive educational booths, recycling initiatives, and the Penang Green Market, providing opportunities for visitors to engage directly with environmentally responsible products, services and community-led initiatives.

A key highlight of the event was the promotion of the ReBag Station initiative by Penang Green Council. Operating on the concept of “Donate what you don’t need, take what you need,” the stations located at Gurney Plaza, Design Village, and GAMA encourage the public to borrow and reuse shopping bags, reducing dependence on single-use plastics.
In line with the event’s sustainability objectives, the event also implemented zero single-use plastic practices, including a rent-and-reuse reusable cup initiative, showcasing how public events can be organised in a more environmentally responsible manner. Also, 500 mangrove trees will be planted from the funds collected through this run.

The Penang government and Penang Green Council also expressed their sincere appreciation to all sponsors and strategic partners whose support contributed to the success of the event.
The gold sponsors included Persada Mentari Sdn Bhd, IJM Land Berhad and Western Digital Corporation.
Special appreciation was also extended to Techom Metal Sdn. Bhd. as the E-Waste and Lithium Battery Recycling Circularity Partner, Bitdeer Technologies Group as the Sustainability Corporate Partner, Gurney Walk as the venue sponsor, as well as all in-kind sponsors for their valuable contributions.
Also present at the run were Penang Island City Council (MBPP) mayor Datuk A. Rajendran, PGC chief executive officer Josephine Tan, PGC director Datuk Lawrence Lim, MBPP councillors Koay Gaik Kee, Tan Soo Siang and MBPP Corporate and Community Management Department director Muhammad Muashraf.
