JAPANESE electronics and ceramics manufacturer Ibiden Co. Ltd, through its Malaysian subsidiary Ibiden Electronics Malaysia Sdn Bhd, is set to further strengthen its presence in Penang with a major expansion of its existing facility.

Ibiden Electronics Malaysia managing director Katsuhiko Hayashi revealed that the expansion project, which is expected to be completed by 2027, will involve a substantial investment of RM2.5 billion.

“Ibiden is planning to invest RM2.5 billion for its capacity expansion plan to manufacture next-generation AI-enabling IC packaging substrate products for our global customers, including Intel, Nvidia, Broadcom, and others,” he said during a courtesy visit to Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow at Komtar today.

The expansion underscores Ibiden’s confidence in Penang as a strategic hub for advanced semiconductor manufacturing and is expected to further enhance the state’s position within the global electronics supply chain.

Also present during the meeting were Acting Consul-General of Japan in Penang Hideyuki Yazama, InvestPenang chief executive officer Datuk Loo Lee Lian, Ibiden Co. Ltd president and chief executive officer Koji Kawashima, and Ibiden Electronics Malaysia executive director Eric Teoh.
