INTERCONTINENTAL Resort Penang is scheduled to open in December, marking the luxury hospitality brand’s first resort in Malaysia.

Located in Teluk Bahang, the resort aims to offer travellers a coastal retreat that combines modern luxury with Penang’s cultural heritage and natural surroundings.

The resort will feature 348 rooms and suites, Club InterContinental, four restaurants and bars, Gemala Spa, family facilities and spaces for meetings and other gatherings.

Its design draws inspiration from Penang’s cultural diversity, with elements reflecting the local character incorporated throughout the property, from the lobby and restaurants to meeting venues and children’s activity areas.

In a recent interview, the resort’s director of sales and marketing, Choong Kit Siong, said the opening would mark a significant milestone for the brand and Penang’s hospitality industry.

“To see the first one coming into Penang, or even Malaysia, is very special because we’ve always wanted Penang to be at that luxury level.

“As we all know, coming from Penang, we are famous not only for our food and culture, but also our people. We can also share our natural surroundings, because when you talk about the Teluk Bahang area, we are not just modern, but we also have very rich natural landscapes,” he said.

The resort’s four restaurants and bars will offer a range of dining experiences, including Peranakan cuisine, Italian dishes and Nikkei cuisine, which combines Japanese and Peruvian culinary influences.

Guests will also be able to unwind at the Gemala Spa, which will offer wellness experiences in a tropical setting designed to promote relaxation and rejuvenation.

For families, the resort plans to provide facilities and activities for different age groups, including trekking programmes, interactive games rooms for teenagers and outdoor lawns overlooking the sea.

It will also offer spaces for group activities and team-building programmes inspired by the surrounding environment.

Although the resort is scheduled to open in December, bookings are expected to commence in April, allowing travellers to plan their stays well in advance.

Choong said the preparation period was important to ensure the resort was ready to welcome guests, particularly international travellers who often make reservations several months ahead.

“They’re looking at probably six to nine months ahead. One reason we set the booking period for April was to ensure that, when we open the hotel, we are ready and confident that everything will be in place by then,” he said.

Looking ahead, Choong said Penang’s position as the brand’s first resort destination in Malaysia could provide a foundation for further growth.

“InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) is a very strong brand within the world. But of course, there’s always room to grow,” he said.

The resort also plans to support local communities through initiatives that may include working with local artisans, environmental programmes and efforts to conserve coastal and rainforest environments.
