KOMTAR tower, which is the tallest skyscraper in Penang, is now lit up in purple until the end of this month in conjunction with the annual International Women’s Day (IWD) celebration.

The state’s iconic building was bathed in purple light beginning last night. It will be lit up from 7pm every night.

International Women’s Day is celebrated globally on March 8 every year.

Komtar assemblyman Teh Lai Heng said the purple illumination of the iconic building is to recognise the achievements, sacrifices and contributions of women from social, economic, cultural, political and even family spheres.

“With this, we hope Penangites will get the message of eliminating gender stereotypes that we are trying to deliver.

Teh said the purple illumination of the iconic building is to recognise the achievements, sacrifices and contributions of women from social, economic, cultural, political and even family spheres.

“We would like to increase awareness of this significant celebration as well,” he told Buletin Mutiara when contacted today.

Meanwhile, Penang Women’s Development Corporation (PWDC) chief executive officer Ong Bee Leng, when contacted, said she is proud that Komtar tower is now bathed in purple light at night to support the IWD celebration.

“It will remind people that purple is the colour for IWD celebration, including the message that goes through it.

Ong said she is proud that Komtar tower is now bathed in purple light at night to support the IWD celebration.

“I would like to thank the Penang government, state agencies and also Komtar management for their continuous support towards PWDC.

“This motivates us to further promoting women’s rights and gender equality,” she said.
