Landed property will be issued fines for no waste segregation compliance come January 1, 2019

THE State Local Government division today announced that effective January 1st next year, landed property owners will be fine for not carrying out waste segregation at their residence.

Exco for Local Government, Housing, Town & Country Planning, Jagdeep Singh Deo said both local councils – Penang Island City Council (MBPP) and Seberang Prai Municipal Council (MPSP) has been instructed to carry out the order.

He said existingly checks have been carried out by both councils and notices issued to owners in this categories throughout the state.

“Till date checks carried out from June 1 to August 31 this year, recorded a total of 282,840 households being monitored and 165, 465 notices issued. We are giving a grace period from today till December 31, 2018 for house owners to comply with the requirement,” he told reporters at a media conference in Komtar.

Also present were Local Government division solid waste management unit head, Oon Lai Kuan.

For multi storey residence, the total fines issued were 31 (MBPP- 6) and ( MPSP- 25), while for commercial premises – 288 (MBPP-20), (MPSP – 268).

Jagdeep commented the issuing of fines for landed property not following policy of waste segregation was made in the beginning of September, 2018, and enforcement for waste segregation at source for commercial premises started from January 1, 2018.

“From June 1 to August 31, both councils have issued a total of 175,053 notices in view of non-compliance of no waste segregation,” he added.

Jagdeep said a fine of RM250 will be imposed with regards to the non-compliance, when the enforcement comes into effect from January 1, next year.
