THE Penang TOP International Tower Run 2019, which will be held on Sept 15, has received an overwhelming response and is reaching its participants’ limit of 1,000 people.

Muhammad Fuad Rosli, the general manager of the JomRun Sdn Bhd, which is event’s official marketing and ticketing partner, said there were only 200 places remaining.

“To date, 800 people have registered for the run, and we are expecting another 200 as per our target of 1,000 participants.

“We are organising the tower run for the third time, and this is the first time the run was sanctioned by the World Towerrunning Association.

“We are honoured to be sponsored by one of the top sports apparel brand, the New Balance, for our event tee,” said Muhammad Fuad in a press conference at the Top Komtar today.

According to Muhammad Fuad, the registration will be open until Sept 10 and the participants would be given an option to top up for a New Balance finisher tee.

State Youth and Sports Committee chairman Soon Lip Chee, who was also present, expressed hopes that the tower run would eventually become the Penang’s signature run.

“We are happy to announce that 800 have signed up for the event. They comprise participants from various countries such as India, Kenya, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia, Australia, Iran, China, Brunei, the Unites States and Malaysia.

“Each participant will be entitled to a medal, T-shirt, bib, and also refreshment when they register for the run. They will be given a timing chip as well.

“This year’s medal will be a special one as it will feature the iconic ‘Komtar’. Also, the top 10 of every category (Men Open, Women Open, Men Veteran, Women Veteran) will receive a trophy while the top five of the Men and Women Open category will receive cash prizes on top of the trophies,” added Soon.

The champions in Men and Women Open category will be given a cash prize of RM1,000, followed by second placing (RM800), third placing (RM 500), fourth placing (RM300), and fifth placing (RM200).

Soon said the flag off would be done in stages on the day of the event to prevent participants from overcrowding the Komtar tower.

The run is jointly organised by the state government and Magnificient Empire Sdn Bhd with the support of ‘JomRun’.

Participants need to brave 1,381 steps to reach the finishing point which is the 68th floor of the tallest skyscraper in Penang.

Those who are interested can register through JomRun application.
