Lebuh Chulia MPKK helps feed the needy

OVER 200 from the underprivileged background had a good reason to smile when they were presented food packages by Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow at Pusat Kawan in Lebuh Klang, George Town, today.

Organised by the Lebuh Chulia MPKK (Village Community Management Council) in collaboration with the state government and Pusat Kawan, the food package distribution programme was made possible with the sponsorship from four donors.

Lebuh Chulia MPKK chairperson Lily Oh thanked the donors, namely Datuk Tan Gin Soon from Happy Realm Restaurant, Katherine Ong, and Lebuh Chulia MPKK secretary Lily Wong and committee member Yeoh Beng Choo for their kind contribution.

“This is a special day for us to collaborate with Pusat Kawan and the state government.

“Pusat Kawan itself has its own food distribution programme every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

“For Lebuh Chulia MPKK, this is a welfare project for the B40. We get the help of Pusat Kawan to call up the recipients from the B40 group,” said Oh.

Chow commended the collaborative efforts to make the food distribution programme to the needy a success.

“I wish to record my appreciation to Lebuh Chulia MPKK, the various donors and Pusat Kawan for starting off 2021 with a loving care programme, giving out food parcels to over 200 residents of this area.

“As Lily Oh has said, they will continue this programme and whenever there are sponsorships, they will come back to Pusat Kawan to reach out to the community here.

“This is one of the many projects undertaken by the MPKK of this area and they have been active during the pandemic, giving out face masks and so on around the locality of Lebuh Chulia,” Chow told reporters after presenting the food packages to the underprivileged.

Pusat Kawan manager Ben Chong said the drop-in-centre usually gives out over 200 food packages on every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

He said the food include rice with curry chicken or fish, egg and vegetables.

“We handed out more packages during Christmas, about 250,” Cheah, who is better known as Uncle Ben, said.
