THE newly established Penang Youth Symphony Orchestra (PYSO) is inviting interested musical talents to become members of the orchestra.

State Youth and Sports Committee chairman Soon Lip Chee said talents aged 12 to 30, who are skilled in symphonic instruments, are welcomed to apply.

“The applicants are expected to undergo an audition process,” he said in a statement on Nov 11.

Soon said the PYSO was also aimed at recruiting talents to perform in the 2nd Asia Pacific Youth Symphony Orchestra Festival 2020.

“The festival will be held at the Petronas Philharmonic Hall in Kuala Lumpur, from Aug 7 to 9 next year (2020).

It is learnt that youth orchestras from several countries would be participating in the 2nd Asia Pacific Youth Symphony Orchestra Festival 2020. Among them are Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand.

Malaysia will be represented by the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra and the PYSO.

“PYSO serves as a platform for youths to be exposed to playing in a proper symphony orchestra. It opens the door for them to further develop their skills in musical performance and even to pursue a career,” Soon said, adding that the PYSO also cultivate friendship and facilitate cultural exchanges among the youths.

Soon said the PYSO would be administered by the Penang Symphony Society.

The deadline for the application is on Dec 15 this year. Application forms are available Soon’s office in Komtar, Dewan Sri Pinang and the Penang Symphony Society office.
